Spain was a Muslim country for over 750 years. Before it was Muslim, it was ruled by 27 Visigoth kings, one after another. Legend tells of a room called the House of Wisdom in Toledo that was locked up by the very first Visigoth king of Spain. Each of the 26 kings put a lock upon the door. When Roderick became the 27th king, he had the door opened, to his great grief. The Burning Boats is a simple telling of the legends and truths that surround the conquest of Spain by the primarily Berber troops, led by Tarek ibn Ziyad, in the name of Islam. This short text is suitable for both children and adults, and is illustrated with 21 watercolor pictures painted by Julia (Juwairiah) Simpson-Urrutia. The illustrations are done in a whimsical style imitative of Mozarabic art.
